The history of t-Shirts

The first T- shirt or Tee Shirt were worn as far back as the early 1900’s and became popular as casual wear after the first world war, when it became common place to see service men wearing uniform trousers and t-shirts as casual wear.

By the 1950’s this item of casual clothing developed into a statement piece and was made a must in men’s fashion by actors, Such as Marlon Brando and, James Dean. These well known icons paved the way for the T-shirt to become a staple wardrobe item and soon they were seen as a must have.

The giant fashion houses such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent branded their tees and sold them as affordable statements for the fashion conscious mind. These fashion houses, adapted and designed forming ‘spin offs’ that we all now know as ‘The polo’ or ‘The V Neck. These variations created the perfect alternative the stuffy well known uniform we had been used too, and branded clothing for business use was born, with giants such as McDonalds printing and embroidering their staff’s work clothing, in a way that kept the brand image youthful and current.

How are t-shirts printed?

Choosing the right print method is dependent on the garments you choose and what you plan to use them for.

There are four main t-shirt printing methods:

  • Screen Printing - low actual printing costs, but expensive to set up, so these are best for larger print runs (50+), and not best suited for custom printing smaller volumes.
  • Transfer Printing - The Cheap and cheerful option, ideal for low quantity printing when long term quality and durability is less of an issue, so ideal for Hen Nights, Stag Dos and  Promotional Events.
  • Vinyl Transfers - The most durable of the custom T Shirt printing methods making them ideal for work wear and uniforms, But not so good for complicated designs or full colour printing.
  • Direct to Garment Printing - The most modern method and ideal for most uses, especially low quantity runs, complex designs and full colour printing, making this the most versatile and popular method. The only real problem is with printing on dark T shirts and fabrics with a looser weave.

Use our handy guides to help you choose the right T shirts and printing method for your needs and budget.
