What is spot UV?

Spot UV business cards look extra special because they are. The surface of the cards are coated with a clear high gloss varnish which is overlaid on to the card, and when combined with matt lamination, creates a striking finish that is both visually appealing and tactile.

The people you give them to not only appreciate the look but also the feel of your business card, leaving an impression of someone who is a cut above the rest.

The cards can be printed full colour single or double sided on extra thick 450gsm card or 600gsm card with matt lamination both sides and spot UV gloss applied to one or both sides.

If you’d like something even more special, why not opt for digitally embossed business cards which are more of less raised spot UV. So you get the same shiny gloss appearance but its slightly raised from the card, resulting in added texture.

Make an impression that counts

The area you choose to have spot UV coating applied to can be almost any size and shape. However, it works best on larger areas and as a pattern on a flat background. It is not recommended that small text or thin lines have spot UV applied due to them being difficult to accurately align with the print underneath.

You’ll notice that a lot of book covers that have had spot UV applied tend to apply it to small text and it’s often miss-aligned with the printed text. Imagine this on an even smaller scale and it would be very noticeable on your business cards and therefore detrimental to your objective.

If you’re going to opt for spot UV, be sure to create something striking. You could highlight a certain part of your logo or create a pattern to add diversity to your business cards. A hint of gloss against a background of matt is sure to catch people’s eye.

When setting up your artwork for the spot UV areas, please create a separate file with only 100% Black shapes present. These should ideally be vector graphics, however, if you’re having difficulty please get in touch and we’ll be more than happy to advise.
